Let Empire Auto Care Replace Your Oil Filter if It Is Clogged

We are serious here at Empire Auto Care when we say that a clogged oil filter can damage your engine beyond repair. The importance of oil changes cannot be overstated, especially when you take into account that the oil filter is replaced during an oil change. A clogged oil filter can circulate dirty motor oil through the engine or prevent the motor oil’s circulation altogether. Here are signs that your car, truck, or C/SUV’s oil filter is clogged.

An Illuminated Oil Light on the Dash

One of the first things that might happen is you may end up with an oil dashboard warning light. This is because a clogged oil filter reduces the oil pressure in the engine. The oil light will turn on because of this reduced oil pressure or because your oil level is too low. Do not ignore the oil light. Again, motor oil is crucial to your engine and a lack of it can damage it irreparably.

Audible Metallic or Grinding Noises

In fact, if you hear audible metallic or grinding noises coming from the engine, pull over and stop driving your automobile. These noises are a sign that the engine does not have oil circulating through it. If the oil filter is clogged, it can impede oil circulation. If you continue to drive your automobile and ignore the metallic noises, your engine could seize up in less than 30 minutes.

Excessive Hydrocarbons in the Exhaust

Motor oil keeps your engine clean, so it helps to keep the exhaust clean, as well. If the oil filter is clogged, it can no longer remove the dirt and grime that the oil picks up as it circulates through the engine. Unfortunately, the dirty motor oil will increase the hydrocarbons found in your vehicle’s exhaust. This can create problems for cars operating in states with emissions testing.

Sputtering Engine Performance

Your engine’s performance may also suffer if dirty motor oil is circulating through it. The engine needs clean motor oil to operate efficiently. If it has dirty motor oil, the oil will deposit grime onto the moving engine parts. This can directly affect how well your engine performs.

Reduction in Overall Fuel Economy

Unfortunately, it can also affect your vehicle’s fuel economy. In order to get the gas mileage guaranteed by your vehicle’s manufacturer, your engine must run as efficiently as possible. An inefficient engine will get nowhere near the gas mileage the automobile is supposed to get.
