Do not panic if there is something wrong with your automobile’s power steering system. Empire Auto Care can inspect the system to determine what is wrong. Once we have found the problem, we will give you a detailed estimate of what it will take to repair it. We will then perform the repairs after you have approved them. In the case of the power steering pump, your vehicle is going to do one or more of the following things. Again, don’t panic. We can replace the steering pump if it needs it.
Groaning or Squealing Noises
Does your vehicle complain every time you turn the steering wheel? Does it make a groaning or squealing sound? This is an indication that the power steering pump is going bad. You will notice that the sound gets louder if you are making a sharp turn that requires you to crank the steering wheel all the way. The pump particularly does not like this when it is malfunctioning.
A Wheel That Is Hard to Turn
Another thing that you might notice while you are cranking the wheel is that it has suddenly become difficult to turn. This can be an indication that the steering pump is malfunctioning and failing to circulate the hydraulic steering fluid through the system. If you do not have enough fluid to help you turn the wheel, the wheel will feel stiff and be difficult to turn.
Unresponsiveness to Steering
Another problem that can be caused by a malfunctioning steering pump is an unresponsiveness to your steering. In other words, you may turn the wheel to make that sharp turn but your vehicle will not change directions. This can cause problems because you are no longer able to control your automobile. It’s important that you get your vehicle off the road if you can and call for a tow truck.
Leaking Power Steering Fluid
The power steering pump can also start to leak the power steering fluid when it goes bad. Consequently, you will end up with red spots or a puddle of power steering fluid on the garage floor.
Disintegration Into the Fluid
Finally, when the power steering pump is a complete goner, it will disintegrate into the power steering fluid. You can tell this is happening if you see metal flakes in the steering fluid.
