To Rebuild or Replace – That Is the Question

You plan to keep your car forever, and that is okay with us. We will do everything in our power to extend the life of your engine so you get the most miles out of it. Eventually, we may be faced with the possibility of needing to rebuild your engine or needing to replace it. The solution depends on what the problem is. Let’s talk more about this below.

Constant Knocking

For example, if your engine is knocking constantly and the knocking sound is being caused by worn rod bearings, we can rebuild the engine in order to resolve the problem. We will not need to replace the engine. This being said, if the knocking sound has damaged the cylinder block, this will require a substantial engine rebuild. It may be better to replace the engine.

Constant Overheating

We may also be able to resolve overheating problems by rebuilding the cooling system. If the engine is overheating because you have blown the head gasket, we can partially rebuild the engine and install a new head gasket. If the engine is overheating because you have a cracked engine block, we will most likely have to replace the engine to resolve the issue.

Flowing Exhaust

Flowing exhaust that makes your tailpipe look like a smokestack is abnormal. This can be a sign that the engine has a fluid hemorrhage in it. If you look at the exhaust and determine its color, you will be able to tell which fluid is hemorrhaging in the engine. For example, black equals fuel, blue equals oil, and white equals coolant. We must assess the damage to determine the solution.

Metal in the Oil

Unfortunately, a partial engine rebuild will not solve the problem of metal in the motor oil. When this happens, your engine is disintegrating. The parts are wearing out and releasing metal into the oil as it circulates through the engine. Consequently, we will have to replace the engine to solve this problem.

Power Reduction

We will also have to replace the engine if it is no longer producing power. As with any machine, the engine will eventually die. When this happens, repairing it is not an option. Your vehicle will need a new engine underneath the hood.
